Barnes Hospital
Background
May 2018 - Outline Planning Application
Barnes Hospital site has been underused for a number of years and its condition and design make it unsuitable to provide modern and high quality mental health services from this location. As a result, a masterplan was developed to bring forward new and efficient healthcare facilities, a new high quality SEN school and residential homes.

Following an extensive engagement programme led by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, involving local stakeholder groups and the community, an outline planning application was submitted and permission was granted by the Council in 2020.

In order to deliver the wider Trust’s Integrated Programme, part of the site was sold to the residential developer, LS Estates Development Limited, the residential element of the outline permission. The remainder of the site is being brought forward by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust and the DfE

2020 planning permission

In 2020, outline planning permission was granted to establish the principle of development in terms of the proposed uses, scale, massing and access arrangements. The accompanying Design Codes provided further guidance on detailed design matters such as materials and building heights.

Additionally, the evolved plans presented on this website have been developed further with reference to the relevant DfE and NHS standards for respective facilities.

What is the Better Envionments programme?

South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust transforming care and environments  in South West London to Make Life Better Together for the communities we serve.

The Trust has to adapt to make sure it continues to provide high-quality care to communities across South West London. Better Environments aims to transform our sites, including outpatient centres like Barnes, over the coming years through significant investment in our services, our teams and our buildings.

The Trust wants to deliver the best possible clinical services, that help people with mental health conditions live well and stay well in the community – the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

When people do need to come into hospital, the Trust is working to provide modern inpatient facilities at Speringfield and Tolworth Hospital that will serve residents across Richmond, Wandsworth, Kingston, Sutton and Merton for generations to come.
